An Overview of New Zealand's Nine Great Walks
There are nine great walks in New Zealand (NZ) that are managed for access by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Some of the walks follow a circular route whilst others are one-way, but some can be walked from either end. Tracks have huts and campsites along the route and all require booking in high season. Some tracks must not be attempted out of season unless you are an experienced and fully equipped hiker.
All can be walked for free as a day walk (no overnight stops) but fees are payable in advance when booking huts or campsites to secure your access and ensure availability. Whichever walk(s) you decide to explore you will be guaranteed stunning scenery and unforgettable views. Make sure you pack your camera along with your survival kit and dehydrated rations!
